Three PGA Championship Winners Commit To Mayakoba Golf Classic
Six Major Championship Winners Now in the Field
Shaun Micheel, winner of the 2003 PGA Championship joins 1988 champion Jeff Sluman and 1986 champion Bob Tway when the PGA TOUR comes to Mexico for the second playing of this historic golf event.
Micheel will be making his first appearance at the Mayakoba Golf Classic while Sluman and Tway will be returning. Sluman, a member of the Champions Tour, finished tied for 13th last year and Tway was tied for 18th.
"These three players are great champions and we are excited to have them as part of the field this year," said Mayakoba Golf Classic Tournament Director Larson Segerdahl. "We welcome Shaun as a first-time competitor and are grateful that Jeff and Bob are coming back. They both have been wonderful supporters of our tournament throughout the year."
With the addition of this threesome, six major championship winners are now in the field. Earlier, major championship winners John Daly, Greg Norman and Nick Price announced their intentions to play in their first Mayakoba Golf Classic.
As a group, there are 10 major championship titles represented— Daly (1991 PGA Championship, 1995 British Open); Norman (1986 & 1993 British Open); Price (1992 & 1994 PGA Championship, 1994 British Open); Micheel (2003 PGA Championship); Sluman (1988 PGA Championship); Tway (1986 PGA Championship).
Fred Funk was crowned the tournament's inaugural champion a year ago when he defeated Jose Coceres in a playoff on the second extra hole. Funk, who captured the Champions Tour’s first event of the 2008 season last week, is scheduled to defend his title.
It is important to note that players (top 64 in the World Golf Rankings) may still qualify for the World Golf Championships - Accenture Match Play Championship in Tucson, AZ scheduled the same week as the Mayakoba Golf Classic. Also, players have until Friday before the Mayakoba Golf Classic to express their intentions to compete in the 132-player field coming to Mexico for the four-round $3.5 million USD stroke-play competition.
